Assignment 2 - Searching for Threads of Overlap
Part One: Searching for Threads of Overlap - Undomesticated
This exhibition, entitled “Undomesticated” was curated by Mona Filip. There are several threads of overlap, the most noticeable being the use of recycled materials. Each artist repurposed their materials, taking something and adapting it to be purely aesthetic. This was art director Nick Fleming’s goal when he made the decision to use only recycled materials. Another overlap is the way the artists took something functional and morphed them in a surrealistic way. A common theme throughout the exhibition is surrealism. There are many everyday objects that were changed as a way to test what we perceive as “normal.”
Part Two: Further Research on Michelle MacKinnon
Michelle MacKinnon is a Canadian artist currently living in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. I first heard of Michelle's work in another class and I was very quickly drawn to it. Her primary style is realism and hyperrealism, which is something I'd like to improve on. Many of her works are portraits, some black and white and hyper-realistic, others in colour and a little bit more "painted" looking. She also has several series of projects that are very intimate and close to MacKinnon specifically, while also provoking emotions in the viewer.
